+The upper half symbolises the former rulers in the area. A large part of the region belonged in medieval times to the Hornbach abbey, which is symbolised by the crosier. In the 15th century those possessions were taken over by the Counts Von der Leyen, whose arms were a silver pale in blue. Another large part of the area was imperial territory, in loan to the Counts of Veldenz for many centuries. Their arms were a blue lion in silver, which is shown here in inverted colours.
