The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The knight is probably St. Simplicius, patron saint of Fulda, as the city was ruled by the Bishops of Fulda. The stars on the seal gradually changed into small fleur-de-lis. The small shield and banner are also used as arms of the bishops, see [[Fulda]]). There is one picture of the arms from 1536 in which the small shield showed a castle instead of the lilies.
