It is not known when he became interested in heraldry. The first mentioning of him in relation to heraldry is in the Der Deutsche Herold from 1885 where he is listed as a new member and places a request for the arms of the (extinct) Bavarian Freiherren von Ströhl. In 1888 he organised a course in heraldry for the graphic designers and book printers in Vienna, but his first published heraldic work dates from 1890, the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Wappenrolle. After that he largely specialised on heraldic art, becoming the leading heraldic artist of his time. His heraldic drawings, especially of his main books, the Austrian-Hungarian and the Imperial German rolls of arms, are among the best heraldic drawings ever published. | It is not known when he became interested in heraldry. During the years he published a number of books and articles in different journals, see below. In 1893 he places a request in Der Deutsche Herold for "Heraldische Humoresten' (funny/comical heraldry) for a book that he was planning. Besides this request, nothing is known about this book, which thus was never completed. He did publish though a series of 'funny heraldry' in the journal Archiv für Stamm- und Wappenkunde in the following years. | |||
Already in 1893 his work, both heraldic and non-heraldic was shown on a printers-exhibition in Leipzig and Dresden. | Already in 1893 his work, both heraldic and non-heraldic was shown on a printers-exhibition in Leipzig and Dresden. |
