If a naval ship is named after a person, it is customary to simply use the relevant family coat of arms as the emblem. In this case, however, this met with objections from the naval leadership. The coat of arms De Witt (the Grand Pensionary's ancestors were apparently rather hunted) shows 2 dogs chasing a hare, a typical rural scene that has little affinity with the navy or the sea. It indeed seemed appropriate, provided that the family crest would be incorporated in the emblem in some way, to deviate from the general rule and look for a different symbolism.
