The arms show the lion of the Markgraves of Meissen, who acquired the city in 1353. The arms date from the late 14th century and have not changed since, except for the composition on some of the smaller seals of the city in the 17th and 18th centuries. On these seals the lion is show double-tailed (compare also [[Neustadt bei Coburg]]).
