The oldest seal of Au dates from the early 19<sup>th</sup> century and shows some shield, but the image on the shield is no longer known. A later seal shows the letter A in a crowned shield. In the summer of 1900 the municipality applied for new arms and the State Archives proposed the arms, which were adopted by the council in December 1900.
