The arms show five golden ears of corn on blue, referring to the agricultural history of the village. The name goes back to Emperor Leopold I who had the village renamed. The original name was first mentioneed in 1120/36 as "Alpitowe" (later "Elpeltaw" and "Eypeltau") and is of Slavic origin, meaning "Swan village".
The arms show a figure of St Leopold (Liupold III of Babenberg), the patron saint of Vienna, with the traditional attributes of a ducal crown, a church model in the right and the flag of [[Niederösterreich]] (five golden eagles in blue) in the left. Leopold is the patron saint of Leopoldstadt parish church.
