Tengen was created in 1876 from the former municipalities of Tengen-Dorf, Tengen-Stadt and Tengen-Hinterburg. The latter had received city rights in 1291, became a possession of Habsburg in 1301 and in 1488 of the Teutonic Knoights. Only during the Habsburg reign the city had used a seal, showing the arms of the Habsburg family. As no other historical arms or seals were known, the new city adopted in 1902 the unicorn from the Lords of Tengen. <br/>
