The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1559 and shows a quartered shield. In the first and fourth quarter is a canting crown (Krone), in the second and third the quartered shield of the Hohenzollern family, viscounts of Nürberg, who ruled the city at the time. This composition was used until the late 17<sup>th</sup> century.
