Sontra received town rights in 1368, but the oldest known seal dates from 1516. The seal shows the lion of Hessen in a hexagonal figure, later in a square. In the seal from 1610 the lion was placed on a rose. This combination was already used previously, as the arms also appear in the roll of arms by Siebmacher from 1605.
