===Origin/meaning===
The history of the seals and arms of the city is rather complicated. Ebern received city rights in 1230 and became in 1335 a seat of one of the provinces in the State of Würzburg. The oldest seal dates from the middle of the 14th century and shows a church. This image remained on the seals until the 16th century. In the 18th century the seals showed an image of the local city hall. On the other hand, a roll of arms from 1544 shows as arms a canting boar (Eber) as arms. This boar never appeared on the seals though. In the 19th century the boar suddenly appears in the seals, standing above the bridge over the Baunach river. The colours were first described in 1835.
