The arms were officially granted on July 21, 1506 by Count-Palatinate Friedrich of Bayern, when he made the city capital of the newly formed Principality Pfalz-Neuburg. The castle as a symbol for the city, however, is much older. The oldest seal, dating from the early 14<sup>th</sup> century, already shows a castle. The castle (Burg) is canting.
