Husum was already an important town in the 14th century, but received its city rights much later, in 1603. The oldest seal dates from the 15th century and already shows the present arms. The gate shows the privilege obtained in 1465 that allowed to built a wooden fence and gates around the villages of Wester- and Öster-Husum. The two lions are the lions of the Duchy of Schleswig, in which Husum was situated.
