Near Belzig a castle was built around 997, which was replaced before 1139 by a castle of the Markgraves of Brandenburg. Since 1298 the castle and surrounding village were part of the Duchy of Sachsen-Wittenberg. Belzig was mentioned as a city in 1269. The arms are based on the oldest seal, known from 1338, but made after 1298, as it shows on the castle the arms of Saxony (Sachsen).
