Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1541 by Friedrich II, Count of the Pfalz. The arms show a savage, a wood-man, making it a partly canting figure (Wald-Eck, or wood-corner). The savage holds a small shield with the diamonds of the Wittelsbach family, Dukes of Bayern and Counts of the Pfalz. The red upper half was used at the time by the Counts of the Pfalz to distinguish the arms from the arms of Bayern.
The red half has also been explained as derived from the arms of the Lords of Pettendorf, the predecessors of the Wittelsbach family as rulers over the town.
