Official blazon
English Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02cm) in height overall consisting of a maroon Greek cross with four gold demi-caducei issuing between the angles and bearing a white enamel helmet of Pallas on a diagonal Greek sword in scabbard.

Origin/meaning

Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The cross, a symbol for aid and assistance together with the caducei, symbols of healing and medicine, allude to the basic mission of the Department. The Greek helmet and sword adapted from the arms of the U.S. Military Academy refer to the long and close association of the two organizations from 1802.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 11 October 1973 for the Medical Department Activity, West Point. It was amended on 18 March 1980 to correct the symbolism.
