WIEN-BRIGITTENAU

State : Wien (Vienna)

Wappen von Wien-Brigittenau/Arms (crest) of Wien-Brigittenau
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The name derives from a chapel dedicated to St Brigitta, which was built in 1650. In 1645, during the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops laid siege to Vienna. After the Swedes had withdrawn, it was deemed only right to honour the great Swedish saint.

The anchor as a sole charge underlines the importance of the River Danube for Brigittenau.

The region is now part of the 20th municipal district bearing the same name.
