The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty and represents the fact that the area was ruled in medieval times by this family. The hearts are taken from the arms of the Lüneburg district and symbolise that the Samtgemeinde is part of this district. The wavy bend represents the Ilmenau river. Three municipalities in the Samtgemeinde are on the one side of the river, the fourth on the other side, which is symbolised by the position of the hearts.
