Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02cm) in height overall consisting of a green rampant lion surmounting a maroon Greek cross beneath a red scroll, arched at the top, the ends curving downward and terminating at the lower sides of the vertical arm of the cross inscribed "HEALTH CARE IN ACTION" in silver letters.

Origin/meaning

Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The color green symbolically refers to life and the lion to health, action, strength and courage. The rampant green lion further alludes to the coat of arms of General Philip Henry Sheridan, the well-known and successful commander during the Civil War for whom Fort Sheridan, the present home area of the organization, was named.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 8 February 1974.
