Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 6, 1969 and again on December 11, 1973.

The arms show a fortified city. For centuries, the city of Friesach belonged to the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In the middle ages, Friesach was an important market town, with its own coins (Friesacher Pfennige).

The oldest seal of the city is known from 1261 and already showed the fortified castle. Al;l later seals and images all showed a fortified town, but often in rather different shapes and colours.

The present arms are based on the composition of this seal. The composition shows in front the Olsator, with the Rotturm in the back. The two smaller towers are the Neumarkter and the St. Veiter Tor.

The present colours are based on the oldest known colours, known since 1730.

Until 1803 (when Friesach became formally part of Carinthia) the arms showed the arms of the Archdiocese of Salzburg in chief.
