Origin/meaning
The arms show the panther of Steiermark, as the city was already in the 12th century the capital of Steiermark. The only difference between the arms of the city and of the state, is that the panther in the arms of the city is crowned.
The panther already appeared in the 13th century seals of the city. All later seals have shown the panther in slightly different compositions, see below.
