23RD FLYING TRAINING SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted as 76 Bombardment Squadron (Medium) on 20 Nov 1940. Activated on 15 Jan 1941. Redesignated as 23 Antisubmarine Squadron (Heavy) on 3 Mar 1943. Disbanded on 6 Feb 1944. Reconstituted, and consolidated (19 Sep 1985), with the following units: 23 Troop Carrier Squadron (which was constituted on 11 Nov 1944; activated on 21 Nov 1944; inactivated on 7 Sep 1946); 23 Helicopter Squadron (which was constituted on 24 Feb 1956; activated on 9 Jul 1956; inactivated on 8 Jan 1958); and 23 Tactical Air Support Squadron (which was constituted, and activated, on 8 Apr 1966; organized on 15 Apr 1966; inactivated on 22 Sep 1975; activated on 30 Nov 1975). Consolidated unit retained designation as 23 Tactical Air Support Squadron. Inactivated on 1 Nov 1991. Redesignated as 23 Flying Training Flight on 22 Dec 1993. Activated on 15 Jan 1994. Redesignated as 23 Flying Training Squadron on 21 Dec 1999.

Antisubmarine patrols off the U.S. coast, Dec 1941-Dec 1943. Transported personnel and cargo in Europe, 1944-1945. Conducted helicopter missions in Europe, 1956-1958. Reconnaissance and forward air control over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Southeast Asia, Apr 1966-Jan 1973. Tactical air control for the evacuation of Phnom Penh, Cambodia and the SS Mayaguez Incident, Apr and May 1975. Trained forward air controllers, Nov 1975-c. Oct 1991. Helicopter training with U.S. Army, Jan 1994-2004. Helicopter training, 2004-.
