586TH FLIGHT TEST SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE
History: Constituted as 586 Bombardment Squadron (Medium) on 15 February 1943. Activated on 5 March 1943. Redesignated as: 586 Bombardment Squadron, Medium, on 9 October 1944; 586 Bombardment Squadron, Light, on 3 December 1945. Inactivated on 31 March 1946. Consolidated (1 October 1992) with the 6586 Test Squadron, which was designated, and activated, on 15 December 1982. Redesignated as: 586 Test Squadron on 1 October 1992; 586 Flight Test Squadron on 15 March 1994. Combat in European Theater of Operations (ETO), 23 March 1944–20 April 1945. Provided operational and maintenance support for all Department of Defense (DOD) test aircraft staging out of Holloman AFB, NM, 1982-1990. Flew developmental test and evaluation missions; supported DOD test flights on White Sands Missile Range, NM, 1991-.
