History: Activated 24 October 1917 as 92nd Division. Organized 24 October 1917 at Camp Funston (Kansas). Inactivated 7 March 1919 at Camp Upton (New York). Reactivated 5 May 1942 as the 92nd Infantry Division. Organized 15 October 1942 at Fort McClellan (Alabama). Deactivated at the same location on 28 November 1945.

Origin/meaning

The Buffalo indicates the name Buffalo Soldiers given by Native Americans to Black Soldiers of the US Army. This design was choosen to indicate that the 92nd Infantry Division was the first Division of the US Army formed entierly (except Generals and Field Grade Officers) of Afro-American Personnel.
