Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in May 1965
The five fleur-de-lys symbolize the five municipalities of Broich, Bronsfeld, Harperscheid, Oberhausen, and Schöneseiffen. The scythe represents agriculture, and the cogwheel represents industry. The color blue is the color of the medieval Counts of Schleiden.
The amt first applied for arms to the heraldic artist Joseph Decku from Bonn in 1963. Hist hirst design consisted of symbols for agriculture and industry, with the blue for the Counts of Schleiden. These were placed in the shape of a letter H, the initial of the Amt, see below.
The second design had the same elements as the final arms, but in a different composition. After some discussion with the State Archives the final design was made and granted in 1965.
