Origin/meaning
The arms appear for the first time in 1578 and 1609. The origin and meaning of the arms is not known. They may have a religious origin, but according to local stories they are symbols for happiness and better times.
The seals of the city never showed the arms. The oldest seal shows the arms of the Lords of Eppstein, who granted the city rights in 1276. Later seals showed an unknown person and St. Mark, the patron saint of the city.
