Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1874.
The arms show in the first and fourth quarter the image of St. Columba, the patron saint of the cathedral. The second and third quarter show the arms of George Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow, commissioner of the great Gothic Revival architect, William Butterfield, who built the Cathedral.
