Origin/meaning

Introduced prior to the 1960s

Lt. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie is shown on the seal of the county bearing his name, because during his service to the colony from 1751 – 1758, governors Willem Anne van Keppel and John Campbell were largely absentee, making him the boots on the ground.

The arms include the scales of justice to represent government, the county’s founding date of 1752, a Native American archer to reflect the county’s indigenous people and a tobacco leaf and pine tree to represent local agriculture.

The Latin phrase translates to “Where there is freedom, there is my country.”
