Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1952.

The lower part has the “cross flory counterchanged”, the arms of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Every Dominican-established school includes this black and white cross into their school arms. Likewise, Veritas, the Latin for Truth, is the motto of all Dominican schools as it is a tenet of the Dominican Order that those pupils in their care must also be in pursuit of Truth in all its forms.

The school was founded on land donated by the Eustace family, and the stag in chief as well as the motto are taken from their family arms. This is based on a Roman legend:
In the second century, Placida was a Roman military officer. While hunting in Tivoli, he experienced a vision of Christ as a stag with a cross between its antlers. The legend has it that the stag asked the soldier “Cur me Persequeris” – “Why do you persecute me?” Placida immediately interpreted this encounter as a sign from God and he and his family converted to Christianity, taking the Christian name Eustace.

The torches are a symbol for learning.
