Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 22, 1962.

The arms are based on the oldest known seals of the town, which date from the early 17^th century. According to legend, the arms were granted to the town in 1552 by the Margraves of Nürnberg, but no historical proof thereof exists.

The church in the right half is a canting element (Kirche=church). The quartered dog's head is derived from the crest of the Margraves of Nürnberg from the Hohenzollern dynasty. The town was a possession of the margraves since 1361.
In the 19^th century a wavy bend was placed over the arms, but this was only short-lived and the old arms were restored.
