Origin/meaning

Friedberg was already a city in the 12th or early 13^th century. In the oldest seal, which dates from 1220 the imperial eagle is shown, standing on a canting mountain (Berg). The eagle became double-headed in 1328, in line with the Imperial eagle. The escutcheon was added in the beginning of the 16^th century. Its origin is not clear, but it may be derived from the Margraves of Friedberg. The mountain disappeared around the same time. The arms have not change since.
