Origin/meaning

The arms date from medieval times, the colours were determined latest in 2006.

The oldest seal dates from 1314 and shows a ram on a bridge with some towers. The bridge (Brücke) is canting. All seals until the 16^th century show the ram and bridge, but not always with the towers. Only between 1353 and 1373, when the city was a possession of the Kings of Bohemia, the ram was replaced by the lion of Bohemia. In the 16^th century the ram was replaced by the canting deer (Hirsch). In the 16^th century the city also became a possession of the city of Nürnberg and the arms of Nürnberg were placed between the towers. When the city transferred to Bayern in the early 19^th century the shield was removed.

The colour of the shield was red until 1818 when it was replaced by the blue of Bayern. In 2006 the historical colours were restored.
