Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the (arch)diocese impaled with the personal arms of the (arch)bishop.
The black (dancing) bears and the tower are taken from the arms of a Bernardin family and thus symbolise here the last name of the bishop.
In the third quarter the Benedictine cross recalls the establishment by Pope Pius VII, a Benedictine, of the Charleston diocese, where Bishop Bernardin was born, ordained and consecrated bishop. The three fleurs-de-lis stand for Mary, the Mother of God, the name given to Bishop Bernardin’s mother in baptism; for Joseph, Jesus’ foster father, the name given to the bishop and to his father in baptism; and for Louis IX, king of France and saint, the bishop’s second name patron.
The motto, ‘*As Those Who Serve,’’ is taken from paragraph 16 of the Second Vatican Council’s Decree on the Bishops’ Pastoral office in the Church which says: ““In exercising their office of father and pastor, bishops should stand in the midst of their people as those who serve."
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the appropriate rank.
