Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 18, 1982.

The main colours of the arms are red and gold, the livery colours of the former Londonderry County Council.

Across the centre of the shield is a fesse dancetée which suggests the capital “M” of the District’s name. Magherafelt is sometimes known as “The Three Spires”, and this is reflected in the arms. The spires concerned are those of St. Swithin’s Church of Ireland, The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption and of the First Presbyterian Church. The arms are completed by a church bell.

The crest shows on a grassy mount a plough betweeen two gold sheaves of corn representing the district's link with agriculture.

The supporters are on the dexter (left side) a roan horse and on the sinister (right side) an elk, both ardorned around the neck with a moral crown and holding a spray of three flax flowers denoting the association with the local linen industry.

The motto means 'With Faithfulness and Service'.
