Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 1, 1942.

Messina is one of the oldest towns in Italy, founded around the 11^th century BC. The origin of the cross is not known. The colours may be the colours of Aragon, as the city belonged a long time to the Kingdom of Aragon (and Sicily).
