English | Gules a Cross Or. |
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 1, 1942.
Messina is one of the oldest towns in Italy, founded around the 11th century BC. The origin of the cross is not known. The colours may be the colours of Aragon, as the city belonged a long time to the Kingdom of Aragon (and Sicily).
