Origin/meaningThe Mezzegra coat of arms has never been recognized or granted by a decree law. The one used by the municipality probably dates back to the beginning of the last century. The arms are based on the arms of the Brentano family, a famous family from the Comacina Island. Their arms show a 'brenta' a type of basket used for transporting bunches of grapes before crushing. Later the arms were changed and the brenta was held by a lion and a snake that were drinking from it, and in the upper half the Imperial eagle. The characteristic elements, the brenta with the snake and the lion, have remained unchanged in the municipal arms. The Imperial eagle, with two heads, has been replaced by a single-headed blue eagle. The unusual color of the bird very likely refers to Lake Como. Three mountains have been added, with the crosses of Calvary to distinguish the arms from the family arms.
