Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 13, 1930.

Neumünster was founded around the 'new abbey' in 1130. In 1870 it became a city. The arms are a combination of the modern city (industry) and its history (swan and Nesselblatt). The swan is the symbol of the Stormarn, to which Neumünster belonged. The Nesselblatt (nettle-leaf) is the old symbol of the counts of Holstein. Already in the early 19^th century industry developed in the city, mainly leather and textile industries. Before 1930 the city used as arms only the swan and nettle-leaf, as shown by Hupp in the 1920s, see below.
