Origin/meaning
The arms of t he city (German name Naumburg am Queiss) show a tower flanked by a helmet with as crest a goat's head and on the other side a small shield with a ram's head.
The composition is clearly of medieval origin and appears on the local seal known from the 15th century. The tower probably designates the town, the small shield and the crest may be related, but may also be derived from separate family arms.
From 1408-1492 the town was a possession of the Lords von Rechenberg, who used a black ram's head in a red shield as arms. Whether they used a crest with a goat, or whether the goat is actually a ram, is not clear. The above arms show the arms with a silver head in the shield, which is according to heraldic rules. Until the middle of the 20th century the town used a black head, which is in accordance to the historical family arms, see below.
