Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 19, 1943.
The arms show a tar barrel with flames. This refers to the tar making for ships, and the importance of shipping and sailing for the city.
The composition first appeared on a seal from 1620. In the mid 19th century B. Kene proposed to change the barrel into a tar oven and asan augmentation of the arms two anchors and the provincial arms in the upper right corner. These were never adopted.
The colours and composition were very similar to the arms of Kokkola and thus in 1943 the colours and composition was formally described.
