Origin/meaning

Pankow was first mentioned in 1311 and became a possession of the city of Berlin in 1370. It remained a small village until the late 19^th century. In the early 20^th century it became a suburb and in 1920 part of Berlin. The arms are based on the single seal of Pankow, dating from the middle of the 19^th century. It shows typical symbols of agriculture, the main economic activity at the time.
