Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 23, 1998, but date already from medieval times.

The three griffin heads are taken from the arms of the Duchy of Pommern. In the 13th and 14^th century the city was contested between Pommern and Brandenburg. The city chose the side of Pommern in 1321, but only in 1354 this was finally agreed upon. The three heads appear on the oldest known seal of the city, known from 1350, but probably a bit older. They refer to the three Dukes of Pommern, Otto I, Bogislaw IV and Barnim III, who jointly ruled (parts) of the Duchy at the time.
