ПЕЧЕНГА Country: Russia Federal subject: Murmansk Oblast |
Russian | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were adopted on March 10, 2011.
The arms show the chapel of the famous Pechenga monastery, founded in 1532. The Aurora Borealis above the chapel indicates the Northern latitude of the town. The base shows a cod, which is a symbol for the importance of fisheries for the city.
Until 1940 the town was part of Finland and known as Petsamo.
The Petsamo region received arms in 1921, showing three dried cod. The region was abandoned in 1922 and the arms were continued by the city.
