Above the Shield is placed a mural coronet suitable to a Burgh and in an Escrol under the Shield this Motto "Pen-y Coc".

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 24, 1938.

Penicuik, the Barony of which was sold by Dr. Alexander Pennicuik to John Clerk in 1646, became a Police Burgh in 1866.

The arms show the gold field and blue/silver chequy from the arms of Clerk of Penicuik, with two black bugle-horns from the arms of the Penicuik family, as represented by Penicuik of New Hall.

In base is St. Kentigern (or Mungo), the patron saint of the town; at one time the parish was known as St. Mungo. The saint is depicted (as in Glasgow) without a halo.

The motto is the Welsh phrase meaning "Hill of the Cuckoo" which gives the Burgh its name.
