Origin/meaning
The book of the Word of God indicates the central place occupied by it in the life of the bishop; both as simple christian, as priest, as missionary and as trainer at the diocese of Chicoutimi. It also indicates the direction given to his mission as bishop of Chicoutimi.
The abbreviation "IHS" (in English:"Jesus, savior of men") refers to the Ignatian spirituality with which he identifies and which helps him live his commitment of faith.
The flame of fire, both ardor and mobility, symbol of the Holy Spirit, represents the missionary zeal the one that led him from his native village (Saint-Thomas-Didyma) to Chile to announce the Good News to the poor, recalling also the pastoral project of the diocese of Chicoutimi:"Go to ... "
The background colors are reminiscent of the colors of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean flag (yellow, green and white), its parent county, its diocese of belonging and the portion of the Church entrusted to it.
The black bar, planted vertically in the center of the coat of arms, represents a prison bar. This bar evokes his ministry in a carceral environment; it also refers more widely to the various forms of slavery, as well as the various forms of poverty, oppression and lack in the lives of the sick, incarcerated persons, itinerants, migrants, and so on.
The motto "THE GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR" (Luke 4:18) recapitulates the set of coats of arms and is part of the text of the prophet Isaiah read by Jesus at the dawn of his ministry:The Spirit of the Lord is on me because the Lord has consecrated me by the ancestor. He sent me to bring the Good News to poor men, to announce to the captives their liberation, and to the blind that they will recover their sight, to release to liberty the oppressed ones, to announce a favorable year granted by the Lord. "Gospel according to Luke 4, 18-19.
