Origin/meaning

These arms are not officially granted, but widely used.

The city of Reus has a medieval origin:it was born in the 12^th century, in the repopulation of the lands conquered to the Muslims. Reus was given its municipal charter around 1180. Since the 14^th century, the rose has been the heraldic sign of the city, probably a canting sign. Later the keys of St. Peter (the local patron saint) were added to the arms, and in the 17^th century the tiara (also referred to St. Peter, the first Pope) was also added.
