Official blazon

Arms: Gules, an ancient crown Or, on a chief argent three pears sable.
Crest: On a wreath of the colours, In front of the battlements of a castle triple towered argent, masoned sable, a Roman lamp Or, inflamed gules.
Motto: Respice et prospice.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 24, 1961 to The Royal Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth alias Worcester Royal Grammar School.

the Crown represents the ‘Royal’ title in the School’s name, this was granted through two charters, the first from Elizabeth I in the 1570s and the second from Queen Victoria in the 1860s.

The black pairs (pears) in the Chief refer to the black pairs of the arms of Worcester, whilst there is no longer a black pear bearing tree on the school site, there may have been in the past.

The three towers are also derived from the arms of the City of Worcester.

The motto, ‘Respice et Prospice’ is generally translated by the School to mean: ‘Cherish the past and look to the future’.
