Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on December 15, 1819 and confirmed on August 26, 1844.
The meaning or origin of the arms is not clear. It probably combines the lion of Vlaanderen with a symbol for agriculture. The arms were granted based on a sketch sent to the Dutch High Court of Nobility, who interpreted the lion as holding the arrows (maybe from the Dutch arms ?) and granted the arms in the national colours, as no colours were provided by the mayor.
After the Belgian independence in 1830 the arms were re-granted, but not changed.
