Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 17, 1962 and changed on September 9, 1970.
Sonsbeck received city rights in 1320 from Count Dietrich of Kleve. All seals of the city showed a canting image, a sun over a wavy bar (Sonne = sun, Beck=Bach=stream). The city character is shown by the addition of a small wall in the sun. The seals also showed some branches in the lower half, see image below.
In 1962 the city received new arms, which showed the same elements, but in a different composition, a sun in the upper half and the wavy bar in the lower. The wall is placed on the division line.
In 1970 new arms were granted, which are also based on the old seals.
In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffee Hag albums. These arms show the exact composition of the seals.
