Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 19, 1895 by Prince Luitpold of Bayern and confirmed on May 30, 1956.

The arms probably date from around 1500, but are first shown in a roll of arms dating from 1530. These arms are identical to the present arms. Similarly, the seals from the 16-18th century all show the same composition, even though the shape and size of the small towers differs widely. The arms show the city character of Teuschnitz and the small shield with the arms of the State of Bamberg. Teuschnitz became a possession of the Bishops of Bamberg in 1388 and remained part of Bamberg until 1803.

In the 19th century many different images of the arms could be found. In an image from 1813 the towers were replaced by trees, in 1818 the bend over the lion was removed and in 1821 the small shield with the lion was replaced by a shield divided in 8 parts in the colours of Bayern, blue and silver. These arms remained in use until at least 1864. In 1884 the lion was restored, but without the bend. In 1895 the old arms were restored.
