History: The Regiment was formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 51st (2nd Yorkshire, West Riding) Light Infantry and the 105th Madras Light Infantry (raised in 1839 as the 2nd Madras European Regiment (Light Infantry)).

Origin/meaning
The French Horn symbolises the Light Infantry role. The White Rose is a symbol of Yorkshire.
